NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2005--Coach Inc. (NYSE:COH), a leading marketer of modern classic American accessories, today announced the reopening of its global flagship store, at the corner of 57th Street and Madison Avenue. The reopening is the culmination of two years of planning and redesign, in collaboration with the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission. The new design marries the luxury brand's sleek modernity with the Art Deco style of the landmark Fuller Building, where Coach has been a tenant since 1994.
This redesign not only marks significant growth in the flagship itself; it also serves as a showcase for design innovations that will be incorporated into Coach's existing and future locations. "We are particularly excited about this expansion because it speaks to our rapidly growing business and also has provided the opportunity to restore and enhance the uniquely beautiful location we've enjoyed for over a decade," said Mike Tucci, President, Coach Retail Division - North America.
"This is one of New York City's great buildings, and its sophistication and timelessness have inspired our team throughout the duration of the redesign," said Reed Krakoff, President and Executive Creative Director of Coach. "As a New Yorker, and an admirer of great design of all eras, I've found this project incredibly rewarding," continued Mr. Krakoff.
The global flagship was designed by the Coach Architecture Group with Eight Inc, under Krakoff's direction. The store's total space expanded over 50 percent, to almost 10,000 square feet with selling space now stretching across two floors. In the new design, Coach will display its full assortment, including pinnacle products and exotics in a progression of rooms, each devoted to a particular category. Shoppers will be able to appreciate the variety, detail and quality of Coach's designs within a lifestyle environment.
In the course of the renovations, Coach's design team paid particular attention to the details of the windows and facade, always respectful of the original Walker & Gillette design. Shoppers will enter on 57th Street, an entrance that was derived from the detailing of the Fuller Building. The entryway will showcase a period frieze that follows the famous black-and-bronze aesthetic of the Fuller Building, yet was custom-made for this renovation.
The store's dramatic focal point is the massive curved stone and Venetian plaster staircase that connects the two selling floors. The perimeter of the space is executed with crisp, clean whitewashed sycamore and bleached walnut, and Coach's new floor fixtures are a mixture of walnut and sycamore wood accented with nickel tubing. Display fixtures include freestanding glass cases, large nickel cases, and custom museum vitrines. One-and-a-half inch thick cast glass inserts in the displays will add further character to the floor.
